Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive provides warmth to those in need

Fargo, N.D., December 1, 2017 —Prairie Public is hosting the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive to help spread some warmth through our neighborhoods. December 1-15, people are encouraged to donate new and gently used sweaters for children and adults at Gate City Bank locations in the United States and at Cambrian Credit Union locations in Canada. The sweaters will be distributed to local families in need.

This is the sixth year that Prairie Public, Gate City Bank, and Cambrian Credit Union have teamed up to host the Sweater Drive.

“Fred Rogers’ cardigan sweater has come to represent his gentle spirit and nurturing of his television neighborhood,” said Christine McClellan, Prairie Public’s community engagement coordinator. “Prairie Public welcomes this opportunity to nurture families in our own neighborhoods, and we encourage those who donate sweaters at Gate City Bank and to help spread the word about this project.”

Fred Rogers’ original sweaters were all knitted by his mother. To help set the tone for a visit with his young viewers, Rogers put on a sweater and changed into sneakers as a way to help children settle in for the television program. One of his sweaters is on display at the Smithsonian Institute.
