Current Events

Assignment: the World: This weekly news program covers world and national events and explains why those events are important. A:TW encourages a greater understanding of current events, serves as the basis for class discussions on news happenings, and sparks curiosity in the individual student to learn more about what’s going on in the world. Check the Instructional Resources Web site for A:TW scripts and student activities for each weekly program. The site has current scripts, lesson plans, and on-line video archived programs.

Kofi Annan: Center of the Storm
Grade levels: 6-9
Contains information about Annan and the United Nations and has a classroom section with special lesson plans about conflict resolution, peacekeeping, and human rights. It also points teachers to the UN's CyberSchoolBus Web site--an excellent resource for teaching about the role of the UN and world affairs.
Global Connections: The Middle East
Grade levels: 9-12
Contains a variety of resources for teachers and students to understand the history and culture of many Middle Eastern nations, including Iraq, as well as the legacy of the 20th century US foreign policy decisions for the region.
Wide Angle: Saddam's Ultimate Solution

Contains an examination of Saddam Hussein's use of chemical and biological weapons against Kurdistan, through photo essays, maps, infographics, lesson plans, and personal narratives.

For Teachers

Reach Every Child - provided by Horace Mann — Includes a wealth of resources and advice for teachers of all subject areas and classroom types. Below is listed some of the best information provided.

Ken Burns — this Web site was designed to help teachers, students and learners of all ages access and use the numerous lesson plans and educational activities featured on the American Stories companion Web sites. Content has been indexed by classroom subject and is arranged by lesson plan title with appropriate grade levels and a brief overview of each activity.

While these curriculum materials weave together video and online resources with an instructional strategy, the lesson plans may be used in conjunction with a particular PBS series or adapted for use as a stand-alone resource. All material listed in this section was developed by trained and practicing educators.

Stop Bullying Now This website offers resources to teachers and adults about what bullying is, and what you can do to stop it. The website features online videos, games, and materials to help stop this common problem among kids.

This site includes state-of-the-art multimedia graphics and exposes students to all subject areas with fun and collaborative online activities.

Guidance

Put Downs and Comebacks — A wonderful new feature developed by CPBEdShare and Reading Rockets called Put Downs and Comebacks helps you boost confidence in your students. When children struggle in school, its easy for them to get discouraged and put themselves down. They might think they will never learn to read or that they are just dumb. To help respond to such put-downs, Reading Rockets has developed a great new online activity for caring parents and teachers. Put Downs and Comebacks explains what may be behind such statements and what you can say or do to encourage a child to keep trying. (A handout version is also available).

Language Arts and Reading

Letter TV — The official Letter TV Web site offers state-by-state correlation to curriculum standards, a printable teacher guide, sample games for kids, printable coloring pages, scripts, program descriptions, and even a collection of printable character images and props so that teachers can make their own Letter TV felt board set.

Science

The Year in Science: Top 100 Stories
DISCOVER Vol. 26 No. 01, January 2005
Includes hundreds of timely articles covering all subjects. It's perfect as a compliment to your current events curriculum and would make a perfect research tool for your Jr. and Senior High students. To take full advantage of the site you will want to purchase a subscription to DISCOVER MAGAZINE, but the teaser articles can get students going in the right direction on hundreds of current events topics.
