The No Child
Left Behind Act mandates that schools
- improve academic performance of all students at a proficient level
under North Dakota, Minnesota, and Montana state standards.
- invest in research-based programs.
-
provide professional development.
-
use technology-based learning.
Research
shows that video and other technologies, when used properly, are powerful
tools to increasing student achievement levels.
Instructional Resources
is a service of the North Central Council for School Television (NCCST),
a non-profit organization of area schools that contracts with Prairie
Public Broadcasting to administer its program.
"To create a virtual educational service unit by merging broadcast
and Internet technologies to deliver member services and as a virtual
service center, to provide links between educators and educational resources"
Supports the No Child Left Behind initiative by providing all North Dakota,
Minnesota and Montana member school educators with Instructional Resources
(IR), supplemental classroom resources and professional development in
a digital world.
Prairie Public's TeacherLine initiative fulfills one of the NCCST Mission
Goals, "To provide professional development opportunities via
broadcast and the Web." TeacherLine provides the opportunity
for teachers throughout Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana to take online
facilitated courses that meet national and local standards through supportive
and collaborative learning communities and exemplary Internet-based resources.
Another of the NCCST's goals, "Obtain and maintain quality multi-media
classroom resources correlated to curriculum content and performance standards,
is addressed on the Instructional ResourcesWeb site through the use
of PBS TeacherSource.
Membership in the North Central Council for School television is $2.32
per student and is renewable each school year. In an arrangement with
the State of North Dakota and Prairie Public Broadcasting, all schools
in North Dakota are current members.
Instructional Resources provides up-to-date, high quality supplemental classroom and professional
development videos and correlating web sites:
-
produced by educational learning specialists.
- selected for Instructional Resources by local educators.
-
aligned to state standards and benchmarks.
Instructional Resources is an alternative to expensive video series
and copyright protected
television programs. Through a state buy, the NCCST leases the rights
to classroom video series for schools and/or individual teachers to borrow
or tape and keep from year to year.
Teachers obtain the videos by taping the programs from a broadcast schedule, ordering from the duplication service, requesting from the lending library, or accessing digital video via the Internet.
Over 2000 instructional videos are available for all grade levels and
all curricular areas virtually a library of video programs. Instructional Resources also offers workforce
training and professional
development programs with online components.
No Need to Erase: Teachers have rights to Instructional Resources
video series from year to year as long as the school continues its membership
and Instructional Resources retains the rights to the series
Powerful Tools
Television and video programs are in themselves powerful tools for enhancing
effective teaching and learning when integrated into new or existing educational
plans. Instructional Resources programs are designed and produced specifically
for the classroom, shorter in length than general audience programs so
the teacher can use them within class times and designed within state
and national curricular standards. Over 2000 individual programs are available
to member schools, covering all grade levels and curricular areas.
Most instructional programs have correlating print or online teacher
guides that provide lesson plans and discussion questions and many programs
have accompanying web sites with a broad range of teacher and student
activities.
More Powerful Used Together
100% VIDEO + 100% HANDS-ON + 100% ONLINE equals success! These three
components add up to something PRICELESS. Each different media contributes
a unique learning experience: combine them all and you'll have the most
exciting and intellectually engaging experience possible.
