Castle includes all the colorful animation of the original one-hour prime time presentation and tells the story of a thirteenth century Welsh castle. Author David Macaulay, who wrote and illustrated the best-selling book of the same title, leads students on a tour of a fictitious castle, explaining the castle’s cultural and sociological significance as well as its architectural design.

This colorful and animated program dramatizes the building of the castle and portrays the lifestyle of the early inhabitants. Macaulay’s distinctive artistic style is captured in his narrative about castles and the medieval period.

Episode Descriptions

1 The Early Middle Ages — During the Middle Ages, castles were built as strategic posts to defend particular territories.

2 The Development of Castles — The site of the castle and the manner in which it was designed were keys to its success.

3 Daily Life in the Middle Ages — Most castles had towns associated with them, many of whose inhabitants were neither noble nor peasant but who formed the basis of a new urban class of artisans and merchants.

4 Technology and Warfare in the Middle Ages Although castles were effective military structures in the 13th century, as time went on, technology rendered them obsolete.
