Author
David Macaulay hosts this award-winning program, based on his book
of the same title. A combination of spectacular location sequences
and cinema-quality animation, these four programs take students
to Frances most famous and awe-inspiring cathedrals, traveling
back in time to 1214 to explore the design of Notre Dame de Beaulieu,
a representative Gothic cathedral shaped by cultural and religious
forces.
Students
are treated to a close look at the vaulted arches, elaborate stained-glass
windows and dizzying cathedral ceilings, which evolved with the
help of such medieval technology as the flying buttress. Cathedral
tells tales from the period, revealing fascinating stories of life
and death, faith and despair, prosperity and intrigue.
