The American Civil War remains the deadliest war in the
Western Hemisphere. The conflict claimed the lives of over 600,000 Americans
-- more than died in World Wars I and II, Korea, and Vietnam combined.This
in-depth program is perfect for teachers introducing a Civil War discussion
to the classroom. The program is broke up into two parts giving an in-depth,
personal look into one of histories great wars.
Episode Description
1. The South Secedes and War Begins - This program discusses the
tension and deep-seeded hostility which had been growing for a long time
between the North and South. The separate cultures of these two regions
led to different economic views which eventually led several states to
secede from the union. Genuine period photographs, recreations and artwork
illustrate the beginnings of the Civil War and some of the earlier battles

2. Four Years of War and its Aftermath - Period photographs, recreations
and artwork illustrate the Emancipation Proclamation, various battles,
such as the Battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln's re-election and assassination,
and Lee's surrender, as well as the sorrowful and bitter events which
followed Lincoln's death. Compelling media support for American History,
American Government and World History units on the ideological origins
of the war, the principles and philosophy represented by the Union and
