The Fairfax Network creates programming for educators to
use in the classroom, and for public television stations and cable systems.
The lineup includes quality K-12 enrichment, parenting,
and staff development programs. Many of the shows come with additional
resource information, teacher guides, and classroom activities created
to fit seamlessly into the curriculum.
Episodes
1 America on the Move Takes your
students on a fascinating journey through the history of the United States
from 1876 to 2000, using the lens of transportation. An extensive museum
Web site provides
history, artifacts, games, and a full teacher's
guide. It is presented in two parts.
2 Universal Words Explores the English language
by investigating word meanings, origins, prefixes, suffixes, and roots.
This fun, fast-paced series includes word games that will help increase
students' vocabularies and their ability to see the everday relevance
of words. In the science segment, Dr. Esperanto builds a wet-cell battery
using compounds and elements from the Periodic Table of Elements.
3 Project Enlightenment In an exercise of
enlightenment, a group of high school students was transformed into citizens
of 18th century America and staged a day of intellectual and enlightening
conversation at Mount Vernon, the estate of George and Martha Washington.
Dressed in colonial costumes and conversing in character, students discussed
government, culture, and plantation life. This program offers highlights

4. She's Got It! Students explore the interdisciplinary
world of invention, learn about the invention process, and meet "Lady
Edisons" of the 21st century. This program features women who appeared
in the Smithsonian Institution's Innovative Lives series. Included in
this showcase of creative women are Ann Moore, the inventor of the Snugli
Baby Carrier, and Sally Fox, creator of FoxFibres. Students
will meet young women who have won invention awards and prizes. The New
Hampshire Young Inventors Contest and the Lemelson-MIT Apprenticeship
program are also highlighted. Web

5. Space Day Living and Working on the Moon —This Electronic Lesson will create excitement among students as they will see first hand the possibilities of what their futures could hold. Students will examine the past, present and future of space flight. In addition to the curriculum-based discussions throughout the show, students will be asked a series of questions about the American space program.
6. Seed to Table: Farming at Mount Vernon—This 30-minute program will provide students with the opportunity to learn more about George Washington as a farmer and a businessman. Students will also learn about how a farm works; how farm resources are managed; how the foods we eat are produced; and how simple machinery works. In addition, the program will provide students with information about the operation of a water-powered gristmill, the jobs that exist at a farm and mill, and the importance of animals to farming.
