Witness
Native Americans, Europeans, and Anglo Americans in conflict during
the early days of the United States. Watch as shifting alliances
and new battle tactics secure our nation's future. Peter Coyote
narrates the little known tales of Native Americans and Frontiersmen
in compelling programs that dramatize: Chief Pontiac's rebellion,
George Rogers Clark's secret mission against the Redcoats, Rogers'
commando-style tactics against the British and the French, and Tecumseh's
defeat..
Episode Descriptions
1
Long Knives A dramatic reenactment of George Rogers
Clark's daring raid during the Revolutionary War to capture British
forts and neutralize their efforts on the frontier west of the Alleghenies.
His victories helped bring Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and other
Midwest states into the US after the War.
2 Pontiac Stirring action scenes illuminate the complex
interactions among the European and North American powers. Pontiac
and his people had been treated with more dignity by the French
than by the British, so they often sided with the French during
the pre-Revolutionary War conflicts among European powers. Though
Pontiac's confederacy had many successes, it ultimately had to accept
defeat along with the French.
3 Roger's Rangers Powerful and bold action scenes
show how Robert Rogers became a part of the French and Indian War
on the British side, fighting the Native Americans. From them, he
learned that guerrilla warfare was more suited to the frontier,
and later went on to lead many successful tactical maneuvers for
the American side.
4 Tecumseh This powerful docudrama illustrates how
Tecumseh distinguished himself as a great Native American leader
in battle as a young man. When he was persuaded that Indians had
to resist the newly independent Americans who were coming into his
land, he took sides with the British in the War of 1812. He died
heroically in this losing cause.
