These programs display major events in our nation from 1760
through to 1992 leading up to and including The Civil War, World War One
and the Cold War.
Programs use dramatic and captivating footage to document the issues and
events leading our country into turmoil and radical change.
Episode Descriptions
1 Forming a New Nation (1760-1800) This program uses period
paintings, graphics, and dramatic motion picture footage to document the
issues and events leading to the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of
Independence and the election of George Washington as the first U. S.
president. Consequences of events, and contributions of leaders such as
Washington are also covered. (20:33) Study

2 Westward Migration (1800-1860) This program uses period
paintings, graphics, and dramatic motion picture footage to document the
issues and events leading to the Louisiana Purchase, the War of 1812,
the Battle of the Alamo, the Gold Rush of 1849, the Missouri compromise
and subsequent pro- and anti-slavery disputes. (20:54)

3 The Civil War and Reconstruction (1860-1900) This program
uses period paintings, graphics, and dramatic motion picture footage to
document the issues and events leading to the American Civil War, the
assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, and the steps taken to revitalize
the nation at war's end. (20:10) Study

4 World War One and the Great Depression (1900-1939) Using
archival film footage, graphics and period paintings, this program illustrates
the technological, social and economic advancement of the first four decades
of the twentieth century: World War I, the post-war boom years, the lapse
into the Great Depression, economic recovery and social change. (18:20) Study

5 World War Two and the Cold War (1939-1969) Using archival
motion picture footage, this program forcefully documents the issues and
events of World War II, the Cold War, the assassinations of President
John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., and the growth of the civil
rights movement and space exploration. (24:22)

6 The Cold War Thaws (1969-1992) This program documents
the easing of U.S. and Soviet relations during the latter part of the
Cold War, major events in the terms of Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter,
Reagan, Bush, and Clinton, as well as the Gulf War of 1990-91, and the
1992-93 United Nations/U.S. peace-keeping mission to Somalia. (18:35) Study
