The Badlands Buddies and the Diamond Lava Rock

by North Skager

One day Digger and Charge were playing tag by the buttes of the North Dakota Badlands. Charge was "it."

Digger was clutching on to the side of a butte and Charge charged at the butte to try to tag Digger.

Digger leaped away at the last second, causing Charge to smash into the rocky ledge.

At that moment, Charge noticed something truly beautiful twinkling in the hillside.

It was a DIAMOND LAVA ROCK! Legend has it that if a Badlands creature processes the diamond lava rock it will protect them from any predators or hunters.

Charge showed Digger what he discovered. When Digger saw the rock he became very greedy, hoping that the rock would protect him. He snatched it away from Charge and quickly bolted to his burrow.

As he scurried away, the diamond lava rock fell out of his paws and shattered into tiny pieces!

Digger began to cry, thinking that he would never be protected.

Charge had an idea. He told Digger, "Why don't we give one of the shattered pieces to ALL of our Badlands buddies?"

Digger thought about it and began to smile. He said, "That is an awesome idea!"

So Digger and Charge handed out the diamond lava rock pieces to all their friends - the antelope, the elk, t he mustangs, the turkeys, the foxes, the deer, the cougars, and all the other creatures of the prairie.

Thanks to the kindness of Digger and Charge, all of the Badlands creatures were protected forever.
