The Conservatory

The original Assiniboine Park Conservatory was built in 1914. It is the oldest facility of its kind in Western Canada. In the style of 19th and early 20th century conservatories, the original Conservatory was copmosed primarily of glass (to admit maximum light) and supported by a framework of iron.

A Norfolk Pine, planted in 1914, and the paths winding around the Palm House are all that remain from the original Conservatory. Construction of the present building was completed in 1969. To protect the plants, the new building was constructed around the old Palm House and the older buliding was dismantled from the inside.
