Planning and Preparation for Success

Know the rules. The value-added product you create may have to abide by certain rules and regulations, such as product safety standards and uniform product codes.

If your product is a food product, you will need to comply with requirements for labeling ingredients and sealing packages. The production of the food must take place in a kitchen which has passed health inspection.

If you are selling your product in an international market, you will need to label your product in the native language of your customers.

If you need help in determining the regulations for your product, consult experts. Assistance is available through industry associations, the North Dakota Department of Agriculture, the North Dakota Department of Economic Development & Finance, the Center for Innovation and Business Development, and the Small Business Administration. For assistance in food quality testing and labeling, contact the Home Economics Department of North Dakota State University.

Make sure that your success is not undercut because you were not aware of the regulations.

Help is available

Because of the potential for economic growth in the development and marketing of value-added products, various agencies and organizations are committed to helping entrepreneurs. Make use of these resources. They can help you to overcome barriers and build a plan for the success of your business goals.
