About the Program

Here's a little poem I wrote about 15 years ago (while in High School) after visiting a vacant house on the prairies of North Dakota.

The Prairie

by Michelle Rowelle

Pink and blue and yellow
All blended into one:
The sky so full of color--
Colors from the sun.

Trees are brown and lifeless
Now barren of their leaves.
The grass has died since summer.
Houses guard with eaves.

Panes of glass are broken,
No face peers from within.
The doors on sagging hinges
Groan against the wind.

Swear there is no life here
And you are far from right:
The color in the heavens
Shuns the dreadful plight!

Over there's a sparrow,
A rabbit running free,
An owl that guards the nighttime
Perched upon a tree.

Though [at times] there's desolation
Few human souls can bear,
The life upon the prairie
Clears the dusty air.
