Country School Memories

by Terry Sather-Lee

As my son was talking about a new game they play at school, it brought back memories of a game called prisoner's base that we used to play at the country school (Green Consolidated near Valley City, ND) I attended. Did any of you play this game, attend country school, or ever hear of Green School? The game was alot of fun as I recall, although we didn't have much to compare it too.

The student body split up into two teams (and sad to say, I was always one of the last to be chosen) One team stationed themselves on one side of the gym, and the other team stationed themselves on the other end. Players would "lead off' from their end of the gym to encourage the opposite side to run up and tag them. If they got tagged they became a prisoner of the other side. If they got back to their wall (and the other player got tagged by another opponent, he became a prisoner. Prisoners formed a line in one corner of their captors' side with end prisoner touching wall with fingertips and stretching as far as possible to touch the fingertips of the next prisoner, etc. until the string of prisoners was stretched towards the center line of the gym.Prisoners could be freed by their teammates if one was daring and quick enough to run up and tag the end prisoner without getting tagged by an opponent.

In the meantime, many other players were "leading off" trying to entice their opponents to come after them, and hopefully, creating a diversion so others could bring prisoners home.
