Agriculture is
North Dakota's number one industry More than
39.4 million acres - nearly 90 percent of North Dakota's land area -
are in farms and ranches. More than
25 percent of North Dakota's population is employed directly by agriculture
or in agriculture-related business. Agricultural
production and manufacturing make up more than 37 percent of North Dakota's
economic base with cash receipts of more than $3 billion. North Dakota
farms provide food and habitat for 75 percent of the state's wildlife North Dakota
has 30,500 family farms and ranches. The average
size of a North Dakota farm is 1,300 acres. North Dakota-based
new generation cooperatives have about 8,600 members. These cooperatives
generate more than 1,320 jobs. North Dakota leads the nation in the production of all wheat, durum, spring wheat, barley, dry edible beans, pinto beans, oats, sunflower or flaxseed; ranks second in all honey and navy beans, and is one of four leading states in the production of sugar beets and rye.
