Understanding Agriculture's Transition into the 21st Century
By David M. Saxowsky

Abstract

Many rural residents, farmers and those who reside in small towns across rural America are sensing that changes are underway which will affect their careers and personal lives in important ways. Some are concerned that many of the things about farming and rural living which they value could be lost . In such an environment, it is important to remember the need to think and talk about change, understand it, and look for ways to influence both the direction and pace of change. Periods of change are also periods of opportunity. By thoughtfully assessing individual and community strengths and weaknesses, as well as understanding the impact of current changes, individuals and communities can prepare to identify opportunities and action plans that will achieve their goals. This educational material is intended to help farmers and residents of rural communities better understand the nature of the current changes and to empower them to shape the changes in ways that bring opportunities and promise to rural America.
