A Labor Of Love

Matt Olien, Producer
One Shining Moment: The History of the North Dakota State "B"

It's an old cliche but true. Working on this Class B basketball documentary has been a labor of love for me. I grew up in a "B" town, Oakes, and while I was never a great ballplayer and didn't even play after my sophomore year, my love for high school basketball never left me. (I was always better at baseball and golf.) My father, friends and I would typically attend the state tournament every year in Bismarck, and the big highlight of those years was, as a 7th grader, being at the 1977 title game between Hillsboro and Epping. To produce a segment on that game -- now a quarter century later -- and to meet the Hillsboro and Epping players and of course Coach Ed Beyer, was a big thrill.

I think the funnest part of this project was when the project's associate producer, David Meiers, and I interviewed all of our subjects this past summer. Dave and I had met some of these guys over the years, but to get to know all of the greats was fun for us -- whether it was visiting with the great Henry Milkey at his Minot home or spending a memorable Saturday in Epping with the '77 starting five. And a quick note of praise for Dave. Although he attended a Class A school, Fargo North, he has always loved the "B" much more. His wealth of knowledge and commitment to this project has been a big help to me.

I guess to me, Class B basketball is more than a game. It is the celebration of community, at the heart of rural life in North Dakota and in some cases the biggest thing that ever happens in these towns. What do you think of when you think of Epping or Hillsboro?

We hope One Shining Moment rekindles memories or touches a place in your heart, and we hope you enjoy this documentary as much as we enjoyed making it.
