Tips to help you write your letter

Don't get angry, frustrated or argue with him

Don't beg or plead.

Don't moralize

Don't ask questions

Don't apologize for being there

Don't comfort him/her if he/she cries

Don't demand confessions

Don't diagnose or judge

Don't compare him/her to others

Do begin each statement with love and concern

  • Use positive points whenever possible
  • Look at him/her when you speak
  • If you cry, stop, collect yourself...continue on. If you can't, motion for next person in line to begin. We can always come back to you.

Remain CALM

A time limit may be needed depending on how many people are participating in the intervention.

  • If fewer than 6 - no time limit will be needed, although 5 minutes should be enough for everyone.
  • If between 6 and 9 people - 5 minutes tops.
  • If between 9 and 11 people - 3 minutes.
