If you have ever been to a church supper, a pancake breakfast, or a pitchfork barbecue, you know that food is an important part of life on the prairie.

That's why Prairie Public is exploring this important part of prairie life with the program Prairie Public Cooks. Prairie Public Cooks brings together recipes from people across our region into a cookbook and onto the airwaves.

In each installment of Prairie Public Cooks, hosts Bob Dambach and Becky Jones are joined by special guests from our viewers who prepare some of the best dishes being cooked and eaten in our area.

Sample Recipes To Tempt Your Taste buds

Whether you call it noodles, macaroni, or knoepfla -- pasta makes a nutritious and delicious meal. In our first Prairie Public Cooks episode P Is For Pasta, our guest cooks whipped up everything from an elegant dish featuring smoked salmon in a creamy sauce spiked with dill to a family-pleasing baked ziti in the spicy Italian tradition to an Asian-flavored, easy pasta salad just right for a busy summer evening.

When the leaves begin to turn color, prairie cooks get out the soup pot and stir up bubbling crocks of comfort food. And our guest cooks on our fall episode S Is For Soups and Stews featured a hearty vegetable soup just right for cold autumn nights, a robust knoepfla soup chock full of sausage and potatoes, and a spicy chicken casserole bursting with flavor.

Anytime two people get together on the prairie, you can be sure that sweets are not far behind. Cakes, pies, cookies, home made candy are all ready for anyone who cleans their plate! Our winter episode D Is For Desserts showcased our guest cooks creating their own sweet specialties. We're tempted by the complex flavor of tiramisu, the luxurious chocolatiness of french silk pie, and a creamy fruit smoothy healthy but still sweet enough to tame the cravings of any dieter.

The inspiration for our spring episode P Is For Pork came from the prairie ritual of getting the grill ready for the start of barbecue season. But there's more to this showcase than just ribs. We're talking the rich taste of roasted pork, the surprisingly delicious combination of pork, cranberries and chilies, an easy brunch casserole, the influences of tropical cuisine in easy sweet-and sour ham, and the homey English taste of pork pie.
