In his article Artesania and Crafts, author Ron Mader reminds us that "tourists love souvenirs…and that the best reminders of a trip aren’t the mass-produced knick-knacks embossed with a destinations name, but physical objects that remind the owners of their journey."

Local production of crafts, art, and food stuffs can contribute to the economic development of an area in significant ways. Pottery that uses natural materials, jewelry that reflects the region and its heritage, decorative items made from wheat, sunflowers, and other North Dakota products, as well as fresh jellies, jams, sunflower seeds, and other food products can all provide the memory-enhancer that eco tourists are looking for.

If no artisans are working locally, "North Dakota Made" items are a good alternative.

In addition to souvenirs and memorabilia, gear and equipment to enhance the eco tourist experience - for purchase and/or rent - will help sustain efforts.

"Nationally, the number one thing tourists do is shop."
