Technology Solutions
A cost effective alternative to school consolidation is the enhanced use of “distance learning.” Distance learning allows schools to offer advanced courses while reducing operating costs. The preferred methods involve “real time” and “two way” interactive instruction that replicates the actual classroom experience for both students and teachers. Materials can be made available via satellite, two-way TV technology and the Internet.
Technology solutions can:
- Provide live or recorded online audio or video classes, video conferencing, satellite interconnections, and other options.
- Connect students and teachers in different places so they can communicate in meaningful ways.
- Offer expanded curriculum including Advanced Placement (AP) and foreign language courses for students without incurring additional teacher salary costs.
- Allow teachers to participate in professional development opportunities without traveling long distances.
- Be more cost effective than hiring teachers or transporting students to distant schools
- Be just as effective as traditional classroom teaching as long as teachers have access to training and support in learning to use new technology to instruct students.
North Dakota supports interactive video clusters that involve 100 of the states 240 school districts. The University system operates an Interactive Video Network that is connected with a number of the clusters and provides video conferencing and university level courses.
