North Dakotans have always been proud of the high quality of our children’s education, but our traditionally strong education system is nearing crisis. Test scores are spiraling down. Student achievement has never been lower. The state is being sued by local school districts who assert the state’s 47 year old funding formula is fostering unequal and inequitable education. The state department of instruction is reporting a shortage of teachers in all the content areas.

How did we get ourselves into this predicament? What will it take to get us out?
