Children
With Asthma

Asthma affects one in every 14 children. Everyone -
parents, caregivers, teachers, friends and school mates -
needs to be aware of asthma and how it works and how to help
a child manage asthma effectively.
To soothe fears and overcome misconceptions, reinforce
information simply and calmly. You can:
- share information about asthma
triggers - the things that stimulate an attack
- use a stethoscope and have the children listen to
each other breathe.
- have children find pictures of various triggers -
flowers (pollen) draperies (dust) people running
(exercise), furry animals, and make a collage poster
- discuss the various symptoms
and treatments
- have a child describe what it feels like to have an
asthma episode
- demonstrate the use of a metered-dose
inhaler and/or nebulizer or have a "show and tell"
feature treatment devices.
- have children find words in the Asthma
Search and Find Puzzle
- practice the asthma management
action plan.
- have children play the Bronchie
video game to learn more about asthma
The more information children have, the more comfortable
they will feel. Knowing that they can help will also make a
difference.
