Controlling and Managing Asthma

Asthma cannot be cured. It can be controlled. It takes work and commitment to control asthma. There are four key things that must be done on an on-going basis:

Warning Signs

When you see or feel early warning signs, don't wait for symptoms to get worse. Stay calm. Breathe slowly through the nose, purse the lips and blow out evenly through the mouth.

  • Take a peak flow meter reading so that you can determine the severity of the episode.
  • Take appropriate medication according to your treatment plan.

By recognizing early warning symptoms, you can take quick action and prevent asthma episodes. Common warning signs include:

  • Drop in peak flow reading
  • Chronic cough, especially at night or when you do not have a cold
  • Difficulty breathing out, or breathing faster than normal
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Fatigue
  • Change in face color
  • Restlessness while trying to sleep
