About This Program

A Local Production
of Prairie Public

The next Healthworks special "Depression" examines the symptoms and treatment options for this widespread illness, and explores how friends and family can help someone they care about overcome this debilitating illness and renew their joy in life.

One in ten people on the prairie will develop depression during their lifetime. But even though depression is one of the most readily treatable medical conditions, only five percent will seek help in overcoming their depression. "There is still a stigma attached to depression," according to Healthworks producer Kim Stenehjem. "People still believe that someone with depression can just snap out of it if they really want -- that overcoming depression is a matter of willpower. But depression is an illness like heart disease or pneumonia, and needs medical treatment. You just don't get over it on your own. More people need to learn that depression is a medical condition so they don't feel ashamed of having it or of asking for help to get well."

Funding for Healthworks is provided by Dakota Medical Foundation.
