Bulimia has many serious health risks. Self-induced vomiting can and does:

  • damage the esophagus through irritation and inflammation due to repeated exposure to stomach acid
  • cause fatal rupture of the esophagus
  • cause chronic gastritis
  • result in dehydration due to loss of water and electrolytes
  • produce potassium loss which can result in cardiac arrhythmias and even cardiac arrest, resulting in death
  • erode dental enamel and accelerated tooth decay
  • cause gum disease
  • lead to chronic bad breath
