This is a touchy subject. To help your friend hear what your saying and not tune you out when talking about an eating disorder, always use an "I" statement not a "you" statement.

Examples of "you" statements:

You can't be serious.

You're nuts

Examples of "you" statements disguised as "I" statements:

I think you need help.

I think you're trying to get attention.

Examples of "I" statements

I'm scared that you're so thin. I know you think you're fat but you're thinner than everyone in this room. I'm afraid I might lose you. Let's get help.

I'm afraid that you're hurting yourself. I want to say "STOP THIS! DON'T DO THIS TO YOURSELF" but I know it's not that simple. Let's get help.

The longer the disorder goes untreated, the more difficult it is to break the cycle. Tell your friend you'll go with her to see a counselor.
