Bulimia
Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa is a serious eating disorder that traps the sufferer in a vicious, self-defeating cycle of bingeing and purging. A person with bulimia will overeat by massive amounts and then induce vomiting, or use laxatives or enemas to purge the body of the excess food. It's an attempt to control weight that goes horribly wrong.

Bulimia starts with a diet that spirals out of control. While dieting and feeling deprived, they "cheat" on their diet but feel worthless because of their perceived lack of will power. They promise themselves to compensate by being extra strict or by doing extra exercise. As time goes on, the little cheats become big binges, and the compensating becomes severe purging.

During a binge, a bulimic feels helpless to stop and is driven to gobble and gorge. Then the cycle swings and the bulimic tries to compensate for the binge by purging through vomiting, frantic exercise, fasting, or using laxatives, enemas, or diuretics.

Because people with bulimia hide their illness for years, many do not seek help until after serious health complications have set in. People with bulimia need help breaking the cycle. Anyone who has or is developing unhealthy eating behaviors should seek professional help.
