Symptoms and Signs of Bulimia Nervosa

Because most patients with bulimia nervosa do not develop the extreme thinness which characterizes anorexia nervosa, it may go undetected for years. There are other signs that may indicate bulimia nervosa:

  • Frequent trips to the bathroom during or after meals
  • Vomiting after meals or after eating
  • Swollen glands in the face or neck
  • Secret hoards of sugary or high-calorie junk foods
  • Food disappearing from cupboards or refrigerator
  • Not eating with the family
  • Binge eating, or eating uncontrollably
  • Stockpiles of laxatives, diuretics and/or diet pills
  • Decayed teeth
  • Foul breath
  • Scarring on the fingers used to induce vomiting
  • Abuse of laxatives or diuretics in attempts to lose weight
  • Mood swings
  • Shoplifting food, laxatives or diet pills
  • Irregular periods
  • Weight at or above normal
  • Signs of depression
  • Excessive, sometimes compulsive, exercise
