Should a Child Attend Funerals?

Participation in funeral services helps a child understand the finality of death. The service should be explained to the child in detail before going so he or she will know what to expect. Children should never be forced to attend a funeral, but should be given the choice.

Children should also be given the option of going to the interment service at the cemetery. Explain in detail what happens and let him or her make the choice.

If the child chooses not to go to the funeral or burial, consider alternative types of memorials and allow the child to say good-bye in a manner he or she wishes such as planting a tree, painting a picture, or making a memory book.
