Decisions to Make While You're Healthy

  • Prepare a valid will - even more important than the disposition of property, the custody of children is determined by a will. If you don't make these important decisions, the state will make the decision on your behalf.
  • Health Care Decisions - consult legal counsel and execute a "durable power of attorney or the legal device in your state that allows you to determine who will make health care decisions on your behalf if you are no longer capable of making decisions for yourself.
  • Medical care/intervention/heroic efforts - discuss your wishes with you family and your doctor and draw up a "living will", advance directive or legal documents required in your state to identify what sorts of intervention you want in the event of a medical emergency, what heroic efforts you desire, if any; and how your medical care should proceed regarding life support, or the withholding or withdrawal of life prolonging treatment in cases of a terminal condition.
  • Organ Donation - along with drawing up any legal documents, make sure your doctor and your family know your wishes regarding organ donations.
  • Funeral/Burial/Ceremonies/Memorials - Making decisions regarding funeral arrangements including cremation and/or burial wishes, will relieve the grief-stricken family of having to make such decisions in a highly emotional state. Knowing the wishes of the deceased regarding flowers, memorials, services, music, and other details is a great comfort to the living.
