The Physical Process of Dying When a person is dying, two interrelated processes are at work. On a physical plane, the body begins an orderly progressive series of changes. These physical changes are the normal way that the body prepares itself to stop functioning. Medical intervention is not required. On the emotional/spiritual plane, the spirit of the dying person begins the final process of release from the body, the immediate environment, and earthly attachments. If a person has unresolved feelings or is unreconciled over some important issue, even though the body is ready and wanting to stop, the person may linger, seeking closure and permission to "let go" from loved ones. Death occurs when the body completes its natural process of shutting down, and when the spirit, within the realm of the values and beliefs of the dying person, completes its natural process of reconciling and finishing. Depending on the type of terminal illness and the condition of the patient, different signs and symptoms arise. Not all of these signs and symptoms will occur with every person, nor will they occur in any particular sequence. With awareness of the signs and symptoms that may occur, loved ones can be better prepared to provide acceptance, support, and comfort during the transition from this life to the next dimension of life.
