Return to Common Childhood Illnesses

After the Shots

  • Give your child acetaminophen (Tylenol) drops every four hours the first day. Do NOT give your child aspirin.
  • After the shot, do something fun with your child -- visit a park, the zoo, or a friend
  • For a day or two, your child's arm or leg may be red or swollen where the shot was given.
  • A warm, damp cloth or a heating pad may help reduce soreness.
  • Frequent movement or using the limb that has received the shot often reduces soreness.
  • Your child may have muscle aches or a mild fever, or be fussy. These symptoms are normal.

Call your health care provider if:

  • Your child has a high fever (a rectal temperature over 105 degrees)
  • Your child cries without stopping for more than 3 hours
