Prepare Your Child

Young children may be fearful about getting shots. You can help by:

  • Explaining why shots are important…"the shot will keep you from getting sick so that you won't miss swimming and other fun things."
  • Don't tell your child it won't hurt
  • Tell your child that it is ok to cry, but encourage your child to be brave
  • Let your child know that the shot won't take long and the pain will go away
  • Hold your child on your lap on the exam table or a chair
  • Stay calm and reassuring yourself
  • Distraction at the moment of the injection is helpful -- sing a song with your child, count to ten, point to a picture, or tell a joke.
  • Give your child acetaminophen (Tylenol) drops an hour before a shot.
