A great divide separates the kind of care Americans say they want at the end of life and what our culture currently provides. Americans say they want to die at home, with their loved ones, and free of pain. But despite the best in medical care and technology, our last days often reflect a quite different reality. Will we ever be able to die on our own terms? To find out, Prairie Public Television and The North Dakota Matters of Life and Death Project, a coalition of over fifty organizations working together to improve end-of-life care, collaborated to offer a locally-produced supplemental resource to the landmark Bill Moyers series On Our Own Terms. "Call In: Matters Of Life And Death On The Prairie" was a two part, live panel show in which attorney John Boulger, Dr. Clayton Jensen, and registered hospice nurse Caroline Schauer answered viewer questions. A wealth of ideas for community and individual action--from how to organize town hall meetings to how to establish a palliative-care hotline--is available through www.prairiepublic.org. Local resources and links to national resources can be found in the Matters of Life and Death section of the North Dakota Medical Association's web site at www.ndmed.com/mld.
