Racism
Racism in the North Dakota and on the northern plains is not overt in
most cases. However, it does exist. One of the reasons for racism is the
lack of diversity itself. Because of its isolated geography, North Dakota
communities have existed in insular enclaves without any requirements
to mix with other groups or people. Racism and distrust exist between
the Swedes and the Norwegians that most people would consider a homogeneous
Scandinavian group! Among native North Dakotans there is an almost universal
distrust of the newcomer, whether from a different state or a different
country. Outsiders must prove themselves. Period.
