Loss of Traditions / Children Abandoning Heritage

When immigrants settled in rural areas and/or ethnic enclaves, it was easier to maintain cultural heritage, language and traditions. With today's urban environments, combined with radio and television, assimilation occurs much more rapidly than it did a century ago. According to Dr. David Danbom, it is difficult to maintain a tight, inclusive cultural community unless there is geographic isolation and limited contact with outsiders.

However, today, a bilingual education is encouraged rather than discouraged, and because ethnic celebrations are often integrated into the celebrations of the larger community, there is the opportunity to share and expand the appreciation for various aspects of cultural heritage and practices with new audiences.
