British Isles
The first wave of immigrants to North Dakota came from the English-speaking
population from eastern and southern states, from the British Isles and
from Canada. The first white settlement in the state of North Dakota was
in Pembina where the fifth Earl of Pembroke, a Scottish landholder, brought
200 Scots and a few Irish in 1812. By 1880, Canadians comprised 7.9% of
all North Dakotans. Pembina, Foster, Grand Forks, Ramsey, and Walsh counties
are heavily settled by people from the British Isles.
