German

Germans came to North Dakota as explorers, trappers, researchers, wagon train members, workers and soldiers long before they began to arrive as permanent settlers. Two members of the Lewis and Clark expedition were of German Descent. In the 1870's Germans began to settle permanently in the region. Germans settled heavily in Cavalier, Morton, Oliver, Pembina, Cass, Stark, Barnes, Ward, and Richland counties.
