Native Americans

The 2000 Census estimates that 4.9% (31,329) of North Dakota's population are Native American, more than double the 1980 census figure of 15,612.

The majority of Native Americans live on reservations including Fort Totten, which was established in 1870 for the Sioux tribe. Fort Berthold (1870) first built as a fortin 1865 with assistance from the Hidatsa became a reservation in 1970 for the Hidatsa, Arikara and Mandan Indians. The Turtle Mountain Reservation (1884) population is comprised of Metis, some of which also have Chippewa and Cree ancestries. Standing Rock (1860) was established for the Sioux Indians, however much of the reservation land is farmed by white residents living within the confines of the reservation.
