Outreach

Many ethnic communities have festivals, events, and activities where they share information and customs within the group and among members of the broader community.

Minnesota ethnic festivals and events include Czechoslovakian, Swedish, German and a range of multi-cultural events across the state.

The Center for Scandinavian Studies at the University of Minnesota (128 Folwell Hall) hosts a "Nordic Coffee" on Thursdays October 4 and 25, 3:30-5:30 pm. It is a great chance for students, faculty, staff, and community members to meet, polish their Danish, Icelandic, Finnish, Norwegian or Swedish and connect with Nordic scholars across campus. "Sweden and Swedish: The Sjölunden Experience," a Swedish Elderhostel sponsored by Concordia Language Villages, will take place from October 8-13 in Bemidji. Participate in a variety of activities including conversations with instructors, large and small group language sessions, handcrafts, baking, song and dance. The cost is $460. Organizations

Sons of Norway- with 70,000 members, the Sons of Norway is the largest Norwegian organization outside of Norway. There are 27 lodges in North Dakota and 51 in Minnesota. The web site features traditional crafts and activities, recipes, and other information at www.sofn.com.

Germans from Russia Heritage Collection at North Dakota State University holds the world's largest collection of history and research materials regarding the Germans from Russia. Their website features history, culture, general information, media information, books, recipes, bibliographic information and information on hosted tours to the homeland and ancestral villages. The site is available in both English and German at http://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/grhc/. The site has an extensive list of links to related organizations and sites.

German from Russia Heritage Society hosts an annual convention and supports a vast library of research materials. Information is available on their website at http://www.grhs.com/

The Germans from Russia Cultural Preservation Foundation (GRCPF) gathers, documents, exhibits, preserves, publishes, translates and makes accessible through donations to existing historical institutions and research collections, resources on history, folklore, foodways, textiles, clothing and the culture of the Germans from Russia and their descendants in North America. www.grculture.org

The Swedish Council of America is an umbrella organization that's mission is to bring into a cooperative relationship all groups and individuals whose purpose is to promote knowledge and understanding of the Swedish heritage in American life, and to strengthen the cultural ties between America and Sweden. The organization is based in Minneapolis, MN. www.swedishcouncil.org

The American Swedish Institute hosts exhibits, lectures, events and activities including the Upplandsfestivalen provincial fair on September 29 & 30 from 10 am - 4 pm both days. The Institute is at 2600 Park Ave. in Minneapolis. Call 612-871-4907. The museum hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 12-4 pm, Wednesday 12-8 pm, and Sunday 1-5pm.
