Vinod Seth
Thirty years ago Vinod Seth planned on working in the US for five years
while taking advanced medical training, but he just stayed. He says of
his decision, "It gets pretty easy to stay over time. You know the
country that you leave changes, and you're not there in those changes.
The people change. You're away from your friends. You become more attuned
to the city your in or the country you're in" After living in St.
Louis, MO for 17 years, Seth was recruited to Bismarck in 1989. The move
met the needs of his family. The pace was slower, there wasn't a one-hour
commute each way every day. There was more time for kids and family. Bismarck
is definitely home now. However, one of the gaps in life in North Dakota
is the fact that there is not an Indian community in which to share music,
and language. To maintain their cultural identity, the family celebrates
festivals and various observances at home and uses sub-titled videos to
help the children pick up language.
