Our Pioneer Heritage

Our region's early pioneers can be sources of inspiration for today's immigrants. "The first settlers also came here with little possessions or money. They were often functionally illiterate. Early immigrants had to deal with the same prejudiced attitudes of the people who came before them. So why did they leave home? What did they hope to find here? What were their expectations? Did reality live up to the dream?"

And what of our "new pioneers?" How are the stories the same? How are they different?

Prairie Public has sought and continues to seeking historical documents and narratives as well as contemporary stories that answer those questions. In this section of the New Pioneers web site, original source materials - first hand accounts, immigrant letters and photos - have been gathered and posted.
