Television and Canadian photographer George Siamandas have produced
a documentary about Portage Avenues colorful history and
its hopeful future. Portage Avenue: Dreams of Castles in
the Sky is a production from the award-winning collaborators
who created Lake Winnipegs Paradise Beaches
and Menonites of Manitoba.
Portage Avenue: Dreams of Castles in the Sky chronicles
the history of the intersection of Portage and Main the
centre of Winnipegs financial district, the pulse of the
city and the determined businessmen who built the earliest
buildings along the street.
The guided
tour tells the story of downtowns heyday and walks back
in time to relive the shopping fuelled by Eatons Department
Store, which, in 1905 cinched the avenues downtown dominance.
Portage Avenue: Dreams of Castles in the Sky also
examines plans for a revitalized Portage Avenue.
