Grand
Forks, North Dakota and East Grand Forks, Minnesota
In
East Grand Forks, more than 12-hundred acres of land bordering the
Red River and the Red Lake River are being redeveloped into a state
recreation area with an interpretive/visitors center, a campground
with trails and fishing access. To learn more, visit the Greater
Grand Forks Greenway web site.
As
components of the state recreation area, a Full
Service Campground and Regional Visitor and Interpretive Center
will be constructed right next to downtown East Grand Forks. In
addition, there will be group/family camping areas, a picnic shelter,
an outdoor amphitheater, fish habitat improvement projects along
the rivers, a new boat launching area, parking areas and restrooms,
and lots of open space for community events. There will also be
an extensive trail system, including walking trails within the greenway
and about 20 miles of bicycle trails along the new and improved
levees designed to protect the community from 200-year flood events.
Pedestrian bridges will connect to other trails and park areas in
Grand Forks, ND and south of the Red Lake River.
Recent
developments on the Greater Grand Forks Greenway
The vast green space along the Red River in Grand Forks and
East Grand Forks, known as the Greenway, will look more like a family-oriented
recreation area than a ground-zero floodplain by the end of 2002
as crews construct parts of the Greenway system in conjunction with
new earthen levees. (More

If
2001 was the Year of New Facilities in Grand Forks/East Grand Forks,
then 2002 will be the Year of New Recreation Options. In 2002, the
entertainment options will move outdoors. Headed by the scheduled
openings of King's Walk Golf Course in Grand Forks and Greenway
development in East Grand Forks, recreation choices will be enhanced
in the new year. (More from
The Grand Forks Herald)
The
city of Grand Forks is looking at a series of belt-tightening measures
that could keep the cost of the Greenway down by hundreds of thousands
of dollars. (More from The
Grand Forks Herald)
