3. -1790 to 1795- Chief Pegius

Between 1790 and 1795, Chief Pegius and his people were part of a western migration of Saulteaux people from the Sault Ste. Marie region into the Netley Creek area. In 1814, they greeted the arriving Selkirk Settlers as friends. Pegius was a consistent ally of the settlers during the colony's early difficult years. Peguis negotiated a treaty with Lord Selkirk in 1817, giving Selkirk 300,000 square kilometers of land along the Red and Assiniboine rivers.
