The first recorded visit of a white man to what is now North Dakota took place when George Washington was six years old. In 1731, Pierre de la Verendrye and his three sons, Jean, Pierre and Francois set out from Montreal to explore the area. The Verendryes discovered and explored the Saskatchewan, Assiniboine, Red and upper Missouri rivers.
