Hairy
Woodpeckers and Downy Woodpeckers look very similar and are
sometimes hard to tell apart. The major difference between
the two is their size. The Downy Woodpecker is the smaller
one. These birds eat insects found beneath the bark on trees,
and they nest in the holes in the sides of trees. They are
generally black with white bellies and a white stripe down
their backs. The males have red patches on their heads.
