About FM River

Volunteers of all ages and experience are needed for a variety of projects being conducted by FM River. If you are interested in volunteering, call River Keepers at 701-235-2895.

Volunteers and particiapnts are needed to help with these events:
• River Keepers Annual Meeting.
Thursday, April 20 at 6 p.m. at the Hjemkomst Center, 202 1st Ave. N., Moorhead.

• River Friendly Yard Management Workshop.
Thursday, April 29 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Hjemkomst Center, 202 1st Ave. N. in Moorhead. Speakers include: Dave DeCock, retired Cass County Extension Horticulturist; Allan Lee, City of Fargo Forestry Department; Jim Hanson, Hanson Landscape Architects; Bob Fogel, City of Moorhead. Displays, handouts and doorprizes. Free.

Midwest Kid Fest
Interested in interacting with and teaching kids about water? River Keepers is looking for volunteers to assist with Midwest Kid Fest on June 18, 2004 at Island Park in Fargo. Volunteers will work with kids on short, simple, interactive water activities. Volunteer shifts are 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.; 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Midwest Kid Fest is by, for, and about kids. Last year 3000 kids attended.

• Race the Red
Saturday, June 5 - Race the Red canoe & kayak races. Competitive at 11 & Fun Race begins at 1 p.m. at Lindenwood Park. End at Dike East. Awards at 2 p.m.

• Lil' Fisherman's Derby and Clinic
Saturday, June 5 - Lil' Fisherman's Derby and Clincic at Dike East 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Learn the basics of fishing at stations. Fish the river and try land a big one. Free hotdogs and Coke. Event is free. Awards at 2 p.m.

• S.S. Ruby pontoon tours
S.S. Ruby pontoon tours and the canoe & kayak rental open for regular tours on Friday, May 21st. Regular operating hours are Tuesday and Friday 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m - 8 p.m. Boat leaves at the top of the hour every hour from under the 1st Ave. N. Bridge adjacent to the Hjemkomst Center Parking Lot at 202 1st Ave. N., Moorhead.

Water quality monitoring
No experience necessary. Monitoring usually takes place between 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Sampling sites on the Red are Cass County 16/Clay County 8, 1st Avenue North Bridge, Cass County 22/Clay County 26. We also sample one site on the Wild Rice River. Volunteers write down observations of the site, use a meter to take measure parameters, grab water samples, and fill bottles.

Volunteers are needed in a number of areas:
Recreation: canoeing, recreation trails and fishing
Environmental/Educational: Water quality monitoring, Paint the Drain (pollution awareness program), Cavity Replacement Program (wood duck houses), youth Water Festival and Lions Conservancy Park
• Organizational: Displays, Newsletter, Fundraising, Office Assistance (computers, mailings)
