Dakota Datebook
May 8, 2005
"New Salem Pigger"

On this date in 1907, a Bismarck Daily Tribune headline read, “Pigger Cinched – Saloon Man Caught Red-Handed at New Salem Saturday.”

The folks of New Salem had been quite irritated by the town’s illegal saloon, so Deputy Sheriff Leonard raided the joint. Sims, the proprietor, and his patrons weren’t in the mood to cooperate and Deputy Leonard ended up arresting the entire bunch.

Justice Bloodgood ordered Sims be bound over to the district court, and the patrons, the story goes, “were each given a good stiff fine and warned not to try such capers again.”
